Environmental Awareness in the Hawke's Bay

Sustainability and a greener vision is a strong focus for Navigate. Being a brand new complex Navigate has been fortunate enough to have the capacity to integrate environmentally aware design with a strong focus on waste and energy reduction. At Navigate we have a mandate to focus on sustainability as part of our decision making not because it is fashionable but because it is a socially responsible approach to conducting business for the benefit of future generations. Going forward, we are fervently looking to identify on-going sustainable solutions.

Our building and garden

  • Our windows are double glazed for insulation and heat efficiency
  • Natural ventilation with louvers, windows and doors at opposite ends of each room
  • Bathrooms with showers only was a conscientious design decision to conserve water
  • The use of recycled building products used for ground floor decking
  • We have a community herb garden adjacent to Navigate. Herbs have been blended around containers which are growing the native Pohutakawa. The herbs are named for educational purposes so parents may educate their children, and the local cafes are free to use them as well
  • The gardens have been planted with natives and drought tolerant plants to reduce water usage in ground care

Our amenities and services

  • Towel recycling, with guests encouraged to reuse towels if possible
  • Guest amenity line (Koha Spa) was specifically sourced to be easy on the water system, and with packaging that is recyclable
  • Recycling bins are provided in each room to encourage recycling in line with complex recycling
  • We have also moved to eliminate bars of soap in favour of liquid soap to minimise wastage
  • There are limited guest newspapers, with copies available at reception to minimise over supply and wastage
  • Dark face cloths are provided to aid in the removal of makeup. Which is another simple way to avoid having to use harsh chemicals to remove make up stains from white face cloths
  • We are hoping to move away from packaged soap to a standalone liquid soap dispenser to reduce wastage – still in the process of sourcing a practical dispenser

Our policies and practices

  • Long life bulbs are used at Navigate to conserve energy and all standard bulbs will be replaced with long life bulbs
  • We have a paperless reservation system and all data is loaded directly into our property management system
  • we have a smoke free policy and we promote a smoke free environment
  • We endorse green cleaning procedures with the use of microfiber cloths which minimises to minimise the use of chemicals
  • We utilise Eco lab chemicals which are formulated to be productive during cold water cycles
